How to prevent hair loss after corona?

A few months after the illness caused by the COVID-19 virus a large number of patients reported a problem with hair loss. Of course, serious consequences such as rapid fatigue, difficulty breathing, joint pain, and damage to the heart, kidneys, lungs and brain have a much more negative impact on the quality of life of convalescents, but hair loss can also be very frustrating and represents a major psychological problem. Many people who had passed the corona suddenly, while washing their hair, noticed the devastating phenomenon that an entire strand of hair remained in their hand and, understandably, they were very worried.

Hair loss after corona is one of the more talked about unpleasant long-term consequences, but don't worry, there are methods for hair to recover, and if you are one of the sufferers, here are some steps you can take right now to prevent or reduce hair loss the smallest possible measure.

What is telogen effluvium (telogen effluvium)?

People who have suffered from corona are often in groups on social networks exchange experiences and discuss the consequences that occurred after a few months after the illness, one of which is hair loss. Scientists claim that it is a form of telogen effluvium temporary hair loss which usually happens after surviving the shock or a traumatic event.

Telogen effluvium occurs at the top of the scalp and is different from a hair loss disorder called hair loss alopecia areata in which the hair falls out "in patches". In this case, the individual may lose a large amount of hair, but in most cases this is temporary and the hair usually grows back. It occurs in both men and women, and the "trigger" is stress. The fever and elevated temperature that exhaust the body during the duration of the corona cause more hair to enter the telogen phase (a resting period in which the hair is completely separated from the root and waste). People who are genetically prone to hair loss experience increased hair loss.

Heal the scalp, not just the hair

As we have already mentioned in previous blog posts, in order for the hair to recover, it is not enough to take care of the hair. It is necessary to strengthen and regenerate the follicles from which the hair grows thanks to factors such as the work of the sebaceous glands and the creation of creatine. Diseases such as corona, certain drugs and therapies, surgical interventions, restrictive diets, unhealthy lifestyle and stress, but also menopause, disrupted hormone function and the natural aging process affect the follicle not being properly nourished and protected, i.e. less and less follicles are produced.

A lifeless scalp is needed first deep clean and do the so-called detox. Free radicals in the follicle are one of the culprits for premature cell death, so you should turn to hair care products that contain substances that fight against free radicals. Therefore, it is necessary to look for products that ensure a firm binding of hair follicle cells and that delay their "ripening". What ingredients should we look for and pay special attention to when looking for anti-hair loss products?

Ingredients that stimulate the scalp and improve scalp metabolism, affect hair vitality as well as scalp microcirculation, tissue regeneration and dead cell removal are:

  • Yeasts

Brewer's yeast is rich in minerals and vitamins necessary for a healthy scalp and hair growth. It contains vitamins of the B complex: vitamins B1, B2, niacin, vitamin B6, folates and pantothenic acid, as well as copper, zinc and selenium, minerals that are important for the scalp and hair roots. A yeast mask or shampoos containing yeast will make your scalp ready again for faster hair growth and better circulation to the scalp.

  • Vitamin B2

As we have already mentioned, the vitamins of the B complex have multiple effects for the health of the scalp and hair. This is dominated by vitamin B2 or riboflavin, which is naturally found in many foods that we use in our diet - milk, dairy products, egg yolks, liver, brewer's yeast, walnuts, dried apricots, beef kidneys, molasses syrup, etc. Look for shampoos, masks and hair ampoules that contain this vitamin and you will see a change in hair quality and volume. It is equally effective in improving the condition of both hair and nails.

Accelerate hair growth naturally

We have already written about the power of natural oils which have a beneficial effect on the recovery of dry and damaged hair (coconut, macadamia, olive, castor oil), as well as other natural ingredients such as aloe vera and shea butter. In addition, lavender, cedar, jojoba and peppermint oils are tried and tested promote hair growth.

Essential oils which nourish hair follicles, protect hair from free radicals, remove excess sebum and kill microorganisms that infect the scalp are: almond oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, rosemary oil, sage oil and lemon oil. The valuable leaf extract is becoming more and more common mimosa tenuiflora (the habitat of this plant is Brazil and Mexico) which has proven to be excellent for hair growth and against hair loss.

Diet and supplements that stop hair loss

Here is a suggestion for your daily menu, which can of course be supplemented and changed, and which is rich trace elements which will affect your hair growth:

  • Eggs for breakfast (because they are rich in proteins, vitamin B12, zinc, omega 6 fatty acids and iron. kefir, yogurt or skimmed milk for calcium intake.
  • Recommended for lunch green vegetables for example. spinach (because of vitamins A and B, beta carotene and iron in its composition), as well as peas (iron, zinc, vitamins of the B group), and red meat (allows hair follicles to absorb nutrients).
  • Fruit for a snack it contains the values necessary for hair growth - whether you opt for nuts, dried fruit or fresh fruit such as raspberries, bananas, strawberries or grapes, you won't go wrong.
  • For dinner, decide on fish rich in omega fatty acids such as salmon, with sweet potato as a side dish (sweet potato rich in beta carotene) and cucumber salad (improves collagen).

It is known that hair restoration should not only be approached with external care, but also from the inside. There are a number of vitamins and nutrients that are used to combat hair loss. No matter how hard you try, it is difficult to get enough of them through your daily diet. This is where they enter the scene nutritional supplements that is, supplements (vitamin D, collagen, keratin, zinc, selenium, B complex).

Thinning and hair loss as a psychological and social problem

It is not easy to accept that the once thick ponytail or rich bun has become reduced to a thin strand and only a few hairs, and the changed reflection in the mirror and the fact that we can no longer make our favorite hairstyles represent a truly stressful experience. The psychological aspect of hair loss is more significant in women, since hair has been a symbol of femininity and beauty since ancient times, and thick and shiny hair is the model that many women aspire to. Of course, it is not easy for men to accept that they started balding before their time and it is emotionally difficult for them to cope with the new condition. Hair loss also becomes a psychological and social problem, due to the loss of self-confidence and the abandonment of former social relationships, withdrawal and avoidance of society.

If you have noticed a large amount of fallen hair on the pillow, brushes or in the bathtub, do not panic or despair, because thinning hair does not have to be a permanent condition. If you improve your lifestyle habits, commit to a healthier diet, develop all anti-stress mechanisms that please and help you, you will see - the results will not fail. With regular hair care and routines that require little of your time, you will return the old shine, quality and volume to your hair and make it the way it was before corona, and even more beautiful.
